At the risk of being one of those instructors who thinks all you have to do is work on this particular class, I'm going to ask you to take a look at
They Say/I Say Chapter 7, "Saying Why It Matters," and then, using one of your research articles for the current assignment.
Try using some of the techniques in the chapter. Tell me why this text makes a difference in you understanding The Ape and the Sushi Master. What difference does it make? Why?
Does it illustrate the claim? Extend it? Complicate it? Clarify it?
This chapter showed me that de Waal makes sure that he has his audience care about what he is saying or he at least shows why we should care. He clarifies to his audience why it is what he is saying should be important to all of us and what he is doing as well as other scientist is very important as well. This helps clarify his claims he has made in the book and it extends a bit because he gives it more meaning if we see it in a different way, as in really caring for what we are reading rather than just reading it because we have to.
ReplyDeleteThe research article I used for the current assignment was addressing how animals, more specifically dogs are very much capable of emotion. "The dogs were asked to shake hands for a treat. When all dogs received their treat, they continued to play. However, if one received a treat and the other did not, the dog without a reward stopped playing."(Butler) This illustrates how a dog has sympathy for another dog if both aren't treated equally. It could also extend De Waal's claim.
